My laptop's video card has failed, and it is next week before a replacement part will arrive.

I resisted the temptation to title the post, "Rosetta Killed My Laptop" ... It is a Toshiba Satellite Pro 6100, a model infamous for heat-related problems without any help from Rosetta. Nothing short of amazing that it has gone this long without the failure from what I've read.

I've got a loaner Dell until the repair is done, and the hard drive from the Toshiba is attached via USB. Can Rosetta be shifted to the loaner with folder copy and startup of BOINC? If it is more complicated and there is already a thread about this, can someone point me to it?

I don't have a lot of time to spend on this, but would like to get the pending workunits completed before the are overdue if feasible. Thanks!

There are no registry entries or any other setup. Everything just runs from the installed BOINC directory. Also, I'm 99.5% certain that other then the "large memory" work units, there is nothing different about work created for your laptop as compared to any other Windows PC.

...so! You SHOULD be able to simply plug the USB drive in to the new PC, navigate to, and run the boincmgr.exe in Windows explorer, and be off and running.

...if any problem with that, download BOINC, attach to Rosetta and crunch on the new PC and it does no harm to leave the other work undone on the laptop. When you get it running again, just "abort" any tasks that have passed their deadlines.

Back up the folder first!

you need to make sure the drive letter and path that BOINC is running from are the same as before - if not you need to edit the two lines in:

boincslotsinitdata.xml

to put the correct path in. That's always worked for me.

Hi everyone. Just wanted to close out the thread and report that folder copy worked like a charm (decided to copy and copy back so I didn't have to keep the USB attached drive in place all the time).

Danny FWIW, I did the copy and start prior to seeing your reply about editing the XML file, and somehow it fixed itself up. It was certainly operating on different drive letters on the failed laptop, and a look at the file shows it now has pathes with the current drive letters.
