I don't know if this has been discussed.

With Windows 2008 server coming out, and introducing "core" servers with no GUI and specialized for specific roles, has anyone thought about BOINC for server core?

It would need to be just like a linux or "dos" client since there would be no GUI.

Just wondering.

Rather expensive way to get an OS to run BOINC though.

I will have a lab with these installed next year, and will be able to run boinc on them if I can figure out how. So I would be adding 10 quad core DL360 G5 servers all with 8 gb of RAM to my collection. They would only be running BOINC after hours, but that is at least 12 hours a day.

Just install boinc from the command line.

http://boinc.berkeley.edu/trac/wiki/BoincCmd for controlling it (if you want to keep secrity and not open the RPC port to control boinc remotely)

Why not download the beta Server 2K8 core and test it in a virtual machine ?

(they may have a presetup Virtual Machine image as well somewhere on the Microsoft site)


and this should give you a way to install it easier
