Users keep contacting me about a Microsoft C++ error window that keeps popping up about Rosetta. Needless to say, this is driving me crazy. Apparently it happens when a WU has a computation error, which is fairly frequent as of late with the Rosetta WU's. Is there anyway to supress the error window from popping up? I've tried installing the latest Boinc client (no help) and installing C++ Redistributable 2010. Of course, after I tried the new C++ Redist I realized that Boinc/Rosetta are probably already using an older version, so it (obviously) did not correct the problem. |

I should add....all of these machines are XP SP3 and fully updated. |

Some tasks are seeing this error, fortunately it is fairly uncommon (although when such problems arise, they are often around for a week or two). The Project Team is always working to eliminate such errors, but as you see one can never been entirely successful at such an effort. BOINC handles many error cases and can clean things up and report the failure back to the project without user intervention. But I am not aware of a way to get BOINC to handle these hard errors on its own. Does anyone else know of ways to suppress that pop-up error window? Rosetta Moderator: Mod.Sense |

The old freeware version of PTFB might be a decent workaround to get rid of the message box if it does pop up: http://majorgeeks.com/PTFB_Push_the_Freakin_Button_d4416.html Does BOINC start a new instance of Rosetta if one crashes or does it need manual intervention? |

This has been going on for about 2 months now over multiple computers. Based on that, I would not characterize the error as "uncommon". I'm sure many users running Rosetta on XP must be getting this popup box: http://www.badthad.com/temp/rosetta_error.jpg Is there some reason Boinc/Rosetta doesn't use the latest C++ runtime, i.e. 2010? |

Per Microsoft: This problem may occur when you use the /GR and the /MD compiler switches, and the version of the Msvcrt.dll file and of the Msvcirt.dll file is 7.0.x. Note This problem does not occur when you use a version of the Msvcrt.dll file and of the Msvcirt.dll file that is earlier than 7.0. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/884538 |

I'm sure many users running Rosetta on XP must be getting this popup box: The usual reason for BOINC projects not using the latest versions of such software is to help insure compatibility with computers still running older versions of their operating systems. |

Thanks, I understand that. By the same token, it's easy enough for an installer to bundle in different dll's, inspect the OS version and install the appropriate version. |
